Jihadist Terrorism

Main Religion: Islam

Population: 18 million

Christian Population: Hundreds

Perpetrator: Al-Shabaab. The goal of this terror group is to establish a strict Islamic state in Somalia. It has been active since the mid-2000s as the armed wing of the Islamic Courts Union (ICU).

Victims: Somali peace activists, international aid workers, civil society figures, journalists, and Christians. Somalia is the world’s second-most dangerous country for Christians, according to the organization Open Doors.

Death Toll/Number Displaced: Conflict between the government of Somalia and al-Shabaab has caused over 3.8 million people to be displaced, along with other factors. This displacement has led to a dire humanitarian crisis, with internally displaced people facing human rights violations, including sexual violence against women and girls.

Mass Atrocities: Targeted and indiscriminate terror attacks that killed hundreds of civilians in and outside of Somalia, rape, torture, and forced displacements, among others.
